Perhaps you have inherited furniture, or there is that one beloved piece you just can't throw away, no matter how worn it may seem because you are so fond of it. Often a problem for anyone updating their furniture is finding ways to make your old and loved pieces work with the new. It can seem like quite a challenge trying to get these older pieces to work, but there are a few simple ideas you can try to create your own unique and sophisticated style in the home. Accessories can make a house feel homely, by putting your own designer stamp on each room. This is a great way to tie pieces of furniture together, and can also be fairly inexpensive. Try using cushions and throws on chairs and sofas to create a shabby chic style, but keeps the design similar and unified. Don't go completely over the top though with accessories, just a few key pieces are enough to tie a room beautifully together. As well as the use of accessories, the use of colour can be a great way to subtly tie a room together. Again, this can be fairly inexpensive, furniture can be reupholstered or painted to be given a fresh new look, and work within a new scheme in the room. Choosing furniture which is all similar in colour, such as different hues of white or colours which work well and complement each other will blend your room together, making the old fit comfortably alongside with the new. When buying new furniture to be put aside your pre-existing furniture, keep in mind the scale of it. Whilst a few pieces that clash in size can be quirky and look fun, going overboard with the idea can make a room look very thrown together and mismatch. The furniture needs to flow with the room, and fit perfectly, luckily there are lots of options in sizes and shapes when it comes to what is available. Not all is lost though, if a piece of furniture doesn't fit or work within a room, try moving the furniture around, or placing it in a different room. Remember nothing is permanent and everything can be re-shifted to create exactly the look you were trying to achieve.
